The physical link of servers to clients is the wires or fiber cables. The ability to communicate and share data and execute commands is done by server software. They are basically the operating system of the physical server computer which has the capability to communicate with linked computers. There are at least three server operating systems usable on an Intel computer. The first is Linux, a version of UNIX adapted for use in the PC. Most computer professionals that served on big computer are familiar with UNIX. The second is the more popular Windows Server. The third is Hyper-V which is actually the latest version of Window Server 2008 optimized for the linking with the Windows Vista as client systems.
These server systems are used to power a Cloud VPS or Dedicated Server. Depending on the server software used, the three types of VPS are created, namely the Linux VPS, Window VPS and lately the Hyper-V VPS. Selection between these three is dependent on the desired compatibility with client systems although the internet has standardized the protocols such that server types are largely transparent. Note, however, that Cloud VPS has uses other than web hosting, like as back-up or database servers which are client sensitive. At webhosting.uk.com, UK Hosting and other subscribers are given all three choices. With these systems in place, cheap web hosting has become a reality.
